Things to do in London

London splits into five areas on this site, and this hub page points to each rather than repeating them: Westminster, the City, the South Bank and the West End for the palaces, museums and theatres most visitors cover on foot or by Tube, plus day trips as far as Bath (about 2 hours by train) and Stonehenge.

Expect a temperate climate with no dry or wet season, averaging around 8°C in January and 23°C in July, and pack layers rather than one heavy coat. Traffic drives on the left. An Oyster or contactless card covers Tube, bus and rail journeys with automatic fare capping set by TfL, which is separate from the roughly £100 per-transaction limit your bank sets on contactless payments.

National museums such as the British Museum are free to enter; timed attractions like the Tower of London are not.
